 Writing Prompt:

If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go, what country, state, or city?  You can look at a map if you need to.  Also, write why you are interested in going there.

If I could travel to any country I would go to Chile.  I have had an interest in Chile since I read a literature book that talked about it.  The history and landscape sounds exciting.  I would take my family and write as I traveled.  I also don't know a lot about it so it would be new and fresh for me.

9:15AM BLOCK 1  Quick Math Assessment; then sharing
Students will attempt a quick math word problem, we will be working on these to prep for the SBAC, the test which will be coming for 3rd grade and up.  Then we will take time to let the students share their week off and writing prompts.

Friday, Friday

Yesterday with Ms Tina was awesome, we did Thai Chi!!!  She taught us not only to practice the movement, but also some of the history, and more!  The students used breathing (calming) exercises and moved slooooowly.

Next week, I (Ms. Cole) will be on a journey with my University, so a sub, Donna Jones will be taking over.  Ms. Y will still also be present.  I will post the schedule for the week on a separate blog post.

BLOCK 1 MATH

We are going to continue to support students in practice and preparation of the "smarter balance" testing.  This is integrated with grade level, conceptual, real life, and multi-step math problems.  It involves learning how to understand the process for solving difficult problems and currently the kiddos are engaging in strategies for the process!

BLOCK 2 English Language Arts

We are starting a new literature unit, focusing on "autobiography".

More info to come...

What is Calvin trying to show us through this cartoon?  What zone can we guess he might be in?

 @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Block 1 Whole class math

Objective:  Students will continue to practice their word problem solving skills, including multiple steps, using our CUBES strategy, while also being introduced to fractions.

Activity:  Using a plant and gardening word problem (see above),  we will dissect (together) the process, using cubes, and creating a visual.  We will not only do the steps, but will be discussing the PROCESS.  This is imperative as we move closer to the "smarter balance" test most students will be involved in.  This word problem is geared towards multiple grade levels and for those students in 2nd grade, they will be offered extra support and tools appropriate to their grade level.

Assess: Work samples, student verbal repsonses

 @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Block 2 Computer Lab=typing practice and vocabulary
20 minutes of leveled typing skill practice
Objective: Students gain typing skills that they can later apply to writing production tasks.

Activity: Students participate in levels according to their progress, focusing on home row keys, finger to letter coordination.  Students get VERY excited and motivated for their progress!

Assess: Teacher observation, level passes.

25 minutes of vocabulary work (games)

Objective: Students gain understanding and familiarity with weekly vocab words (theme related).

Activity:  There's a variety of ways for students to learn through interactive games.  The game they use depends on their ability level and grade level.

Assess: Activity Results

 @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Photosynthesis INTERACTIVE brainpop

Objective: Students will learn about the photosynthesis process!

Activity:  Short brainpop video, open discussion, class quiz, and reading.

Assess: Observation and quiz.

(2 Week Theme) Springtime is near! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We will be focusing the next two weeks on the awesomeness of spring, renewal, growth, etc.

We can utilize this theme and play it into much of the curriculum.  We will be growing plants (lima beans), observing and engage in the scientific process.  We will be doing springtime, art related projects, we will use the theme of renewal to discuss new self-goals, and so much more!  The intention is to wrap all of our subjects and academic expectations into real life process (this is the heart of common core), including math, literature, writing, science, art, and more!

Weekly Break (for me) Not!

Student teacher take-over!

This is our student teacher's last week...

Ms. Mercedes has been awesome!  This week she has all sorts of stuff planned with a celebration around the beloved author Dr. Suess.  So far, we've read articles, books, watched  a mini-documentary, made our own littel Lorax's.  In math, we've continued pushing our multi-step word problem skills.

Pictures to come of our Lorax!
