"The Lab"
What is an "author's purpose"?

Partner excercise...
With a partner, read the passage and discuss what the answer is, then you will share with the class.
Sample

1.  It was Halloween, and Rachel and her best friend Mattie were looking forward to an evening of fun. Their first stop was the haunted house. Every year, it was opened just for a few days around Halloween. Rachel and Maddie had been coming there every year since they were eleven years old, so they weren’t scared. But it would still be fun. As they pulled up to the house in Rachel’s old car, Maddie noticed that theirs was the only car in the parking lot. Before they opened the front door, they saw lights flickering on and off in an upstairs window. “They’re just doing this to set the mood,” said Rachel. “It’s just someone with a couple of flashlights, and the other cars are probably all parked around back.” She turned the doorknob and opened the creaky front door.

What is the author's purpose of this writing?

to express personal feelings
to persuade

to entertain
to inform

The author wants to show that ____.

there is something a little different about the haunted house this year

Rachel and Maddie really are afraid

Rachel shouldn't have driven to the haunted house

the house is really haunted this time
