Reading Labs:
The literature reading labs are interactive groups, each ran by a separate staff that include analysis, and in-depth lessons around the books.  Students are both reading and writing during this time.  Depending on the book, the story may be one longer novel or it is a quickly changing story.  The groups are by appropriate level and targeting the needs of the individual students.

RECESS

The middle part of thee day,

What is a summary?
I've noticed a struggle to write about what you read. We will do it together!!

 Let's look at some samples!
 The Hobbit:

The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.

Book Summary:

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

Non-Ficition (meaning the book is about information and facts) summaries are more precise.

Let's do some together!

ART!
Students will look at art as a voice and vehicle for change, with respect to MLKjr day.  Examples of posters that speak about an issue.  Watch a video on art for change project.  Then students will pick their own issue they want to speak about and design their own poster.  They can use a template of a poster from online or create their own.  When this is complete, they will post on our class collaborative blog and comment on each others.

Art as a voice, protest posters!
